From stethoscope to paint brush

This is my story. Life has an interesting way of presenting different opportunities and sometimes it is challenging to make a decision especially if there are also so many opinions around, usually with the best of intentions.

I worked hard to get into medicine and really thought that I wanted to work as a doctor. I really worked hard during my studies. But soon realised that this was not the path for me. After graduation I looked for other possibilities. I had this feeling in me that there is something else for me and I wanted to find out what that means. And that’s when I met a greatly gifted artist, Rene Snyman, and she introduced me to the world of classical realism and representational art. I couldn’t get enough. I have taught art lessons over the years and also discovered my love for teaching.

In 2022 I started studying a Masters degree at the Florence Academy of Art. The course is specifically designed for art educators. I couldn’t believe it. I have found my tribe! I had the most amazing experience in Florence, Italy in 2024 where I graduated from the Florence Academy of art.

It has been a crazy journey, and God is so faithful.

Created to create

I truly believe that we are all made intentionally and for a purpose. We have certain interest, attributes and the amazing ability to learn new skills to step into the person God has made us to be.

I know that I want to create and make artworks that inspire and I also want teach and assist others to do the same.

About my art

My work is informed by and rooted in the classical principles of the old masters. As part of my atelier training we are encouraged to work form life as much as possible. This is the best way to learn and really observe the richness of the visual world around us. The more you paint form life, the more you practice your visual memory. Then if I really need to work from a photograph I can interpret the photograph using my knowledge I gained by painting from life. I mostly work with oil paint, graphite and charcoal.

Plein Air painting

I just love stepping out of my studio from time to time and spend time in nature. It is so exhilarating to paint in the time-constraint of changing light.

If you know of a beautiful spot and you want it captured in an oil painting, let me know.
